- As per latest data released by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), Power generation during Jan-2025 clocked in at 8,152GWh, posting a 2% YoY decline. We note that power generation remained largely unchanged during Dec 2024–Jan 2025 (-1% YoY), despite the government's introduction of the three-month winter package (Dec–Feb).
- Average cost of generation for Jan-2025 stood at Rs11.01/kWh, down 25% YoY. Generation costs, however, saw a MoM spike, with the average cost of generation rising 17%.
- The sequential increase in generation cost is primarily due to reduced share of hydel in the power mix and a shift to the more expensive fuel source, coal. Hydel generation stood at 11% in the energy mix compared to avg of 30% of the mix in the last 12 months.
