IMS Sector Update: Pakistan Banks Exposure to Rising Yields - MCB, BAHL & FABL Best Positioned
(Exposure Read)

(Risks)
Pakistan Banking Sector: Mapping Exposure to Rising Yields
Intermarket Securities Limited - 18 September 2026
The gap between market yields (KIBOR/PKRV) and policy rates has been drifting higher. Intermarket Securities has analyzed a sample of Pakistani banks based on Jun'26 financial statements to evaluate their liability sensitivity, deposit repricing speed, capital cushion, and bond book duration exposure.
Bank Exposure Classification
- Best Positioned: MCB, BAHL, FABL, and MEBL – Asset-sensitive funding or strong capital buffers leave these banks least vulnerable to interest rate hikes.
- Mixed / Average: NBP, HMB, BAFL, HBL, and ABL – Moderate repricing gaps compensated by comfortable capital buffers or good asset quality.
- Most Exposed: UBL, BOP, BIPL, and AKBL – Higher sensitivity due to wide funding-side gaps or heavy reliance on borrowings/thin capital buffers.
Adjusted Repricing Gap / Deposits (%) Comparison
D-SIB Capital Requirements & Sector Valuation
- D-SIB Changes (effective Mar'27): CAR requirements revised to 14.0% for UBL (headroom 5.4%), 13.0% for HBL (headroom 4.2%), and reduced to 12.5% for NBP (headroom 9.8%).
- Sector Valuation: The banking sector is trading at a TTM P/B of 0.42x and P/E of 7.5x.
- Brokerage Preference: IMS recommends playing defensive, adequately capitalized banks. MCB and BAHL are the cleanest reads, with FABL close behind on funding, and NBP shielded by its large capital cushion.
Key Investment Risks
Unrealized mark-to-market losses on fixed-income investments, aggressive repricing of deposit costs, and potential regulatory capital tightening.
