The Multan Tax Bar Association (MTBA) has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to restrict the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) powers to conduct raids and inspections under the guise of tax revenue collection.

In a formal letter to the prime minister, the MTBA highlighted that FBR field formations frequently increase visits, inspections, and search operations as monthly, quarterly, or budgetary deadlines approach. The association noted that while lawful enforcement against tax evasion is necessary, these statutory powers under the Sales Tax Act, 1990 and Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 are sometimes misused to pressure businesses into meeting aggressive revenue targets.

The MTBA has requested the premier to direct the Finance Ministry and FBR to ensure that enforcement actions are fair, legally justified, and not driven solely by collection targets.
