The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan to end the concessional sales tax rate on electric vehicles (EVs). The IMF argued that electric vehicles are a luxury item rather than a necessity for low-income consumers, calling for the withdrawal of concessions.
As Pakistan drafts its new auto policy, the proposal includes raising the sales tax on EVs and charging stations from the current 1% to the standard rate of 18%. This change would significantly impact the cost of electric cars in the country.
| Item | Current Tax Rate | Proposed Tax Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Vehicles (EVs) | 1% | 18% |
| EV Charging Stations | 1% | 18% |
| Tax on Rs 10m EV | Rs 100,000 | Rs 1,800,000 |
