NBP Pension Case: Supreme Court reserves verdict; TSL expects minimal to no financial impact
National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) -
National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) - Pension Litigation Update
Taurus Securities Limited | Flashnote | September 17, 2026
According to disclosures by National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), the Honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan has concluded the hearings regarding Government increases in pension for retired employees and has reserved its judgment in the matter.
Background of the Case
- March 27, 2024 Order: The Supreme Court (Review Jurisdiction) dismissed all civil review petitions filed by NBP. Following this, the Bank made payments to the majority of petitioners and non-petitioners.
- Scope of Direct Litigants: The judgment directed NBP to pay arrears of Government pension increases strictly to direct parties/petitioners. However, another group of pensioners pursued separate proceedings.
- Interim Stay: NBP obtained interim relief from the Supreme Court suspending a Lahore High Court judgment that had directed NBP to pay increases to the other group. Final hearings on this matter have now concluded.
Financial Impact Analysis
- Prior Recognition: As noted in NBP's Annual Report 2025, the Bank as a matter of abundant caution had already incorporated the financial impact of this litigation in its financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2024.
- No Further Impact Expected: Taurus Securities Limited (TSL) anticipates no additional financial impact from the reserved Supreme Court judgment, unless the scope of petitioners expands beyond previous estimates.
- Minimal Incremental Risk: Even if the scope is widened, any incremental financial impact is expected to be minimal and almost inconsequential for NBP's overall financial outlook.
Investor Takeaway
The conclusion of Supreme Court hearings removes legal uncertainty surrounding NBP's pension liabilities. Since provisions were already made in prior financial statements, the forthcoming final judgment poses negligible downside risk to the bank's profitability and capital base.
